Public help sought in finding missing trucker in Iowa
Police in Lake View, Iowa, northwest of Des Moines, are searching for a truck driver who has been missing since the early morning hours of Tuesday, Nov. 21.
According to the Lake View Police Department, truck driver David Schultz, 53, has not been heard from since Nov. 21.
A report from the KCOU 9 in Sioux City said Schultz’s truck “was found Tuesday morning on the road, not pulled over,” on Highway 71. His phone and wallet were inside the truck and his jacket was found in a nearby ditch. He was reportedly supposed to unload in Sac City, Iowa -- just north of Lake View -- with a load of hogs, but he never made it to his destination.
Anyone with information regarding Schultz’s whereabouts are asked to call the Lake View Police Department at 712-657-2513.
Volvo recalls trucks with passenger-side bench seats
Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain trucks built between April 5, 2017, and Oct. 20, 2023, with a passenger side bench seat.
The recall includes approximately 638 model year 2018-’24 Volvo VN, VNR and VHD trucks, in which the passenger side bench seat may be inadequately attached to the floor, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 207, "Seating Systems" and 210, "Seatbelt Assembly Anchorage."
In the affected trucks, the attachment points for the bench seat may fail, allowing it to shift and increasing the risk of injury during a crash.
Dealers will replace the weld nut with two nuts and a washer, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Dec. 15. Owners can contact Volvo Trucks customer service at 800-528-6586 with recall number RVXX2312. NHTSA’s recall number is 23V-769.
Wyoming high wind warnings on I-25 and I-80
The Wyoming DOT on Monday issued a warning for commercial truck operators, saying that forecasted high winds could hit 55+ mph and present an "extreme blow-over risk" to enclosed trailers under 40,000 GVW.
WYDOT warned that I-25 between Cheyenne and Wheatland between 10 p.m. Monday and 10 a.m. Tuesday and I-80 between Rawlins and Laramine between 11 p.m. and Tuesday 8 a.m. will see dangerous crosswinds.
This update comes from the WYDOT Commercial Vehicle Operator Portal, which can send drivers updates on road conditions and was updated after the state's "winter from hell" left drivers stranded for days.
DOT human trafficking committee meeting in December
The Department of Transportation’s Advisory Committee on Human Trafficking (ACHT) is set to hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
The meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time, in person at U.S. DOT headquarters -- 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20590 -- and virtually.
The ACHT was established in 2022 as mandated by the 2018 Combating Human Trafficking in Commercial Vehicles Act and later authorized by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law singed in late 2021.
The committee’s previous meeting was held on Oct. 3 and covered DOT’s counter-trafficking efforts, a presentation by Truckers Against Trafficking and more.
A final agenda that includes a virtual participation link will be posted on the ACHT website at least one week in advance of the meeting.
Members of the public who wish to attend are asked to register, including name, title, affiliation, and whether they plan to attend in-person or virtually, to trafficking@dot.gov by Dec. 5. There will be 30 minutes allotted for oral comments from members of the public joining the meeting.
