BMW is recalling 91,800 2005-2006 model-year Mini Cooper and Cooper S cars manufactured from Jan. 5, 2005, to Nov. 28, 2006, along with 2005-2008-MY Mini Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Convertible cars manufactured from Jan. 5, 2005, to July 31, 2008.
Because of a combination of manufacturing, installation and exposure issues, the front passenger seat occupant detection mat may malfunction and render the front passenger air bag inactive when it’s needed during a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
To correct the problem, Mini dealers will replace the front passenger seat occupant detection mat, free of charge. The recall is set to begin May 1. Vehicle owners can reach Mini customer service at (866) 825-1525.
