General Motors is recalling 3,690 2013 model-year Chevrolet Malibu sedans because the console transmission gear-selection indicator may not illuminate the shift position selected.

The problem, a violation of federal safety regulations, may cause a driver to unwittingly choose the wrong transmission position and pose a safety threat. The recall affects Malibu sedans manufactured in 2012, from April 10 to Aug. 2, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

GM dealers will resolve the issue by replacing the transmission gear selection control module. There will be no charge for this service.

Vehicle owners can reach Chevrolet customer service at (800) 222-1020. GM’s number for this recall is 12162.
