Ford's 2016 Explorer mid-size SUV with the new 2.3-liter inline-4 EcoBoost has begun rolling off the assembly line in Chicago, the automaker has announced.
The 2016 Explorer equipped with the new engine and front-wheel drive replaces the 2.0-liter engine. The new model achieves an EPA-rated 28 mpg on the highway, 19 mpg city, and 22 mpg combined. The outgoing model was rated at 28/20/23 mpg respectively.
Ford is building the 2016 Explorer at the Chicago Assembly Plant.The 2016 Explorer base, XLT, Limited and Sport models went on sale in May. The new Platinum model will go on sale later this summer.
In 2013, commercial fleets added 12,414 Explorer models, according to Automotive Fleet research.
