Mazda's 2016 CX-3 subcompact SUV can achieve a highway fuel economy of 35 mpg in front-wheel drive, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced.

The front-wheel CX-3, which will go on sale in late summer, can also achieve 29 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg combined. The all-wheel CX-3 can achieve 27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined.

The four-door CX-3 is powered by a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G engine that produces 146 hp and 146 lb.-ft. of torque. Both front- and all-wheel-drive models also will come standard with a SKYACTIV-DRIVE six-speed automatic transmission. Models featuring the company's i-ACTIV AWD use a predictive algorithm to pre-select the necessary drive mode to compensate for road and weather conditions.

Mazda introduced the CX-3 at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
