Toyota Recalls Prius V Cars for Stalling Risk

Toyota Motor Sales USA is recalling approximately 109,000 2012-2014 model-year Prius V hybrid vehicles so dealers can update engine control unit software to address a stalling risk.

In these vehicles, current software settings for the motor/generator engine control unit (ECU) and hybrid ECU could result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially damaging them. If this happens, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle can enter a failsafe mode.

“In rare circumstances, the hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop,” Toyota said in a released statement.

Toyota dealers will update the applicable ECU software to resolve the problem.

Vehicle owners can reach Toyota customer service at (800) 331-4331.
