The national average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline increased 1.7 cents to $2.083 for the week ending April 4, according to federal records.

The modest increase came on the heels of month-long run-up, and prices remain 33 cents higher than a year ago. Prices increase in nine regions tracked by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Among the regions, the sharpest increases came in the West Coast without California (3.6 cents to $2.242) and the Midwest (3.1 cents to $1.988). The Lower Atlantic region was flat with an increase of two-tenths of a cent.

Two states have an average gasoline price of at least $2.50 per gallon, including California ($2.793) and Hawaii ($2.599), while 23 states remain below $2 per gallon. Oklahoma's $1.817 per gallon is the nation's lowest, according to the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report.

Meanwhile, the average price of diesel fell six-tenths of a cent to $2.115. The price is now 66.9 cents lower than a year ago.
