Ford Motor Co. is recalling 865 2015-2016 model-year Ford Focus Electric vehicles in the U.S. to address a potential transmission problem affecting motive power or park function, the automaker said.

In some vehicles, the differential pinion shaft might wear out, resulting in a shaft fracture that would cause the vehicle to unexpectedly lose motive power or transmission park function. This condition increases the risk of a crash or an injury, Ford said in a released statement about the recall.

To address the problem, dealers will install a new transmission differential assembly equipped with a friction-reducing coating on both the pinion shaft and pinion gear bores.

Ford noted it isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the issue.

The safety recall covers Ford Focus Electric vehicles built at the Michigan Assembly Plant from Aug. 20, 2015, through April 13 of this year, as well as vehicles built at the Saarlouis Assembly Plant from Feb. 28 through March 30 of this year.

In addition to the 865 vehicles recalled in the U.S., 66 will be recalled in Canada.
