Mercedes-Benz will offer a plug-in electric fuel-cell GLC SUV in 2017 in the U.S. that will provide about 310 miles (500 kilometers) of range as calculated by European standards as part of an aggressive push into electrification, Daimler has announced.
The GLC F-CELL uses a large lithium-ion battery rated at 9 kWh that provides additional power if the driver can't immediately locate a hydrogen fueling station.
In 2017, Mercedes-Benz will also offer electrified versions of all of its Smart cars and a new plug-in S500e with an all-electric operating range of about 31 miles (50 kilometers).
Daimler will eventually offer all Mercedes-Benz models with an electrified powertrain. The company is investing 14.5 billion euro ($16.36 billion) in research and development over the next two years.
