Faulty Transmission Sensor Clusters Spur Future Recalls

Automotive supplier ZF must notify its automaker customers that 505,000 transmission sensor clusters — used in nine-speed automatic transmissions — will need to be the subject of future safety recalls, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness, which can cause the transmission to unexpectedly shift to neutral, NHTSA said.

Once notified by ZF, the auto manufacturers that purchased these transmission sensor clusters will file recalls and the list of vehicle models involved will be made public. Dealers will update the transmission software to address the problem, according to the federal safety agency.
