Calif. Governor's Fuel Tax Would Fund Infrastructure

California's Gov. Jerry Brown has proposed raising gasoline taxes and vehicle fees to raise $5 billion per year to repair the state's crumbling streets, highways, and bridges, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The new revenue would also be used to increase mass transit.

Brown needs a two-thirds approval in both houses of the Legislature to approve the plan, which includes a 12-cent-per-gallon increase in the gasoline excuse taxes that would go into effect Nov. 1.

The plan also includes a new, annual vehicle fee that would average about $51 based on the value of the vehicle.
