Kia Motors America is recalling 135 2017-model year Kia Niro hybrid crossovers because they’re at risk for losing electric power steering assistance, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
These cars may have a damaged motor-driven power steering (MDPS) connector, resulting in a loss of electric power steering assistance.
“Loss of power steering assist would require higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may increase the risk of a crash,” NHTSA warned on its website.
Kia dealers will replace the MDPS motor, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 7. Vehicle owners can reach Kia customer service at (800) 333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC145.
