California DMV registration

Q. Can you discuss the pros and cons between passive and real-time GPS?

A. Passive GPS doesn't track a vehicle in real time. Instead, it stores information, which is then downloaded once the vehicle has been returned to the office. Active GPS, on the other hand, transmits data allowing for real-time tracking. Passive GPS only allows for the identification of problems after the fact, and is of no help if the vehicle is lost or stolen. Active GPS has a real-time alert function that sends notifications that can help to identify fuel-wasting behavior, including excessive idling. Since it transmits the location of the vehicle in real time, its location can be pinpointed if it's lost or stolen. Passive GPS also requires staff time to download the data, whereas Active GPS requires no additional staff time to deal with the mundane task of downloading stored data.
