Toyota Recalls Tacoma Trucks for Oil Leaks

Toyota Motor North America is recalling approximately 228,000 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks in the 2016 and 2017 model years to fix an oil leak problem that might lead to a loss of vehicle control, according to the automaker.

The trucks involved have rear differentials that may leak oil, Toyota said. If a vehicle is continuously operated in this condition, the rear differential could become damaged. Noise and reduced propulsion might result.

“In some cases the rear differential could seize, resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle and increasing the risk of a crash,” Toyota warned in a released statement.

Toyota dealers will check the rear differential for any oil leakage. If no leaks are found, all fasteners will be re-tightened. If leakage is discovered, technicians will replace the rear differential carrier gasket with a new one and install new fasteners. If rear differential components are damaged, the rear differential carrier assembly will be replaced with a new one. There will be no charge for the repairs.

Toyota will begin notifying Tacoma truck owners of the recall by mail in mid-June.
