XL Hybrids has gained approval from the California Air Resources Board to sell a modified hybrid version of Ford's Transit cargo van to fleets in that state. The XL Hybrids Transit has also gained eligibility for a $2,500 state voucher to defray the cost to fleet purchasers.
The vehicle modifier offers versions of the Ford Transit cargo and passenger vans with its XL3 hybrid electric drive system. The board issued an executive order that permits the use of the vehicles from the 2017, 2016, and 2015 model years.
Fleets can also obtain a $2,500 voucher under the state's Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP). Fleets can obtain vouchers for as many as 100 vehicles. The second 100 vehicles would be eligible for a $2,000 voucher per vehicle.
XL Hybrids also offers a gasoline-electric hybrid version of General Motors' vans, including the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana.
The XL3 system increases miles driven per gallon by about 25%, according to the company.
