Hyundai is recalling 161,074 Sonata and Genesis sedans in the 2015 and 2016 model years so dealers can replace malfunctioning switches that are supposed to indicate when the parking brake is applied, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

In the affected cars, the warning light that indicates when the parking brake is engaged may intermittently fail to illuminate in the dash. The problem stems from corrosion in the switch, NHTSA said.

If the parking brake indicator is not illuminated when the parking brake is applied, the driver may operate the vehicle with the parking brake partially engaged, affecting the brake performance and increasing the risk of a crash,” the federal safety agency warned on its website.

Dealers will replace the parking brake switch free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on June 30.

Vehicle owners can reach Hyundai customer service at (855) 671-3059. Hyundai’s number for this recall is 164.
