Mazda is recalling 57,878 2015- and 2016-model year Mazda6 sedans in the U.S. because a problem with the occupant classification system wiring might lead to a loss of power steering assist or the deactivation of the front passenger air bag.

The problem stems from welding debris created during the manufacture of the front passenger seat frame. This debris can damage the occupant classification system (OCS) wiring, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

To resolve the issue, Mazda dealers will attach a protective pad on the seat frame. If the OCS harness is damaged, insulating tape will be applied to the harness. These repairs will be performed free of charge, NHTSA said.

The recall is expected to begin Sept. 29. Vehicle owners can reach Mazda customer service at (800) 222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1517H.
