California DMV registration

Q. What if we do long runs (over 100 air miles) but do not do more than 8 days in a 30-day period? Do we need to be ELD compliant?

A. Under the ELD mandate rules, drivers who only keep RODS for 8 days in a 30-day period are exempt from having to keep electronic logs, although they will have to continue preparing paper logs.

You may also qualify for the short-haul exception, which allows for longer-duty periods and distances traveled under certain, specific circumstances, including, but not limited to, the driver isn’t required to have a CDL to operate the vehicle.

As with any exemption, you should consult with your company’s legal counsel and/or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to verify if your drivers are exempt from complying with the requirements of the ELD mandate.
