Mazda's top-selling CX-5 compact SUV adds cylinder deactivation to improve fuel economy and increases in price by $105 to $25,125 for the entry model (including delivery fees), Mazda has announced.

Cylinder deactivation, which has been employed by other manufacturers, will be available for the first time on a four-cylinder engine that powers the CX-5, according to Mazda. The vehicle will go on sale in December.

Mazda will offer the vehicle in three trim grades, including the Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. Front-wheel drive is standard, while i-Active all-wheel drive adds $1,300. Option packages include i-ActivSense, Preferred, and Premium for each respective trim grade. The i-ActivSense package for Sport adds adaptive high beams, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic on/off headlights.

The 2018 CX-5 is again powered by the SkyActiv-G 2.5 engine that makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque that's paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
