Mitsubishi Motors North America is recalling 83,555 2014-2018 Mirage cars because the air bags might malfunction, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In these cars, the internal acceleration sensor in the safety restraint system’s electronic control unit can misinterpret vibrations arising from poor road conditions or a flat tire. Perceiving the vibrations as an error, the sensor might disable the air bags and prevent them from deploying during a crash, NHTSA said.
Mitsubishi dealers will reprogram the applicable software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin this month.
Vehicle owners can reach Mitsubishi customer service at (888) 648-7820. The automaker’s number for this recall is SR-17-006.
