Q. How do you keep track of the HOS if a few of your trucks are model-year pre-2000, and most of your fleet’s trucks are model-year 2000-plus?

A. Trucks that are pre-2000 and whose drivers need to prepare logs must continue preparing their records of duty status (RODS) using paper logs, an automatic onboard recording device (AOBRD), or a logging software program.

For fleets that desire to have a consistent way to record RODS across the fleet regardless of the model year of the vehicle, an ELD can be used on a model-year pre-2000 truck as long as it conforms to the ELD rule’s technical specifications. In this case, the ELD may use alternative sources to obtain or estimate required vehicle parameters, but they must be in accordance with the accuracy requirements in Section 4.3.1 of the ELD rule.
