California DMV registration

Q. What does “Level 3 data” mean?

A. Level 3 data capture is one of the fundamental ways fleet operators are able to better identify and more effectively rein in costs, because such data provides a greater level of detail than what’s offered by a consumer debit or credit card on an open-loop network.

Level 3 data includes essential information such as a driver ID, vehicle ID, job number or odometer reading. This helps operators gain access to granular transaction detail, run standard and custom reports, identify opportunities for savings, set limits on dollar amounts and product types, and ensure drivers spend only on fuel and related vehicle services.

Not all fuel cards collect Level 3 data, and thus cannot provide the level of transaction detail many businesses need to control fuel costs.
