VIDEO: What’s Wrong With Takata Air Bags?
Automotive supplier Takata is further expanding its historic safety recall, adding 3.3 million frontal air-bag inflators installed in certain 2009, 2010 and 2013 vehicle models, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The latest round of Takata recalls will include vehicles manufactured by Honda, Toyota, Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Tesla. These automakers will provide more detailed information during a filing with NHTSA later this month.
Globally, at least 20 deaths and more than 180 injuries have been linked to Takata’s defective air bag inflators, which can explode during air bag deployment and disperse shrapnel in the vehicle. In the U.S., approximately 46 million air bags in 34 million vehicles are currently under recall for the problem, according to NHTSA.
