Two cities in Germany have the right to ban some diesel cars from regions worst affected by air pollution, reports the BBC.

The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig, Germany, said Stuttgart and Düsseldorf could ban older, more pollutant diesel cars in a ruling that would allow the cities authority to implement limited bans that would prevent some cars from driving into the city center, according to CNN. This decision could propel efforts to implement similar restrictions across Europe.

Stuttgart is home to Mercedes-Benz and brand Porsche, meanwhile, Düsseldorf and its surrounding area serves as a vehicle manufacturing hub.

In the past, environmental campaigners have sued multiple German cities, claiming that the cities are responsible to reduce air pollution to protect people, according to CBS.
