Toyota Pauses Autonomous Driving Tests

Toyota will temporarily halt testing of vehicles equipped with its autonomous Chauffeur mode on public roads, after an autonomous Uber car struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona.

Toyota Research Institute paused the testing because leaders "feel the incident may have an emotional effect on our test drivers," according to a statement from spokesman Brian Lyons.

Uber halted testing of its testing program on March 19, after one of its vehicles killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz. on March 18. The car was in autonomous drive mode, but there was a human safety driver behind the wheel.
