A Waymo self-driving car was involved in a three-vehicle crash on May 4 in a busy shopping district of Chandler, Arizona, that was likely caused by a red-light runner, according to media reports.
The crash occurred when a human-driven Honda sedan ran a red light and swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle. It veered into the opposite lane and collided with a Waymo Chrsyler Pacifica, which was in manual mode at the time. The human operator of the self-driving car suffered minor injuries, reports Fox News.
Both vehicles appeared badly damaged.
Waymo's self-driving cars have driven over 5 million miles on public roads since 2009. Those cars have been involved in over 30 minor crashes, but have only been responsible for causing one, according to FastCompany.com. That incident took place in 2016 when a Lexus SUV in autonomous mode changed lanes into the path of a public bus. No one was injured.
