Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 6,204 2015 model-year Volkswagen Golf, Golf GTI and Audi A3 vehicles because potential fuel pump failure can lead to engine trouble, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.
The problem stems from improper nickel-plating of components within the fuel pump. If the fuel pump fails, the vehicle will not start. If the pump fails when the engine is already running, the vehicle will stall, increasing the risk of a crash, NHTSA said.
Volkswagen dealers will inspect the recalled cars and replace any defective fuel pumps, free of charge.
Vehicle owners can reach Volkswagen at (800) 893-5298 or Audi at (800) 253-2834.
