One-Third of Canadian Diesels Had TCO Above Gasoline

Twelve of the 34 diesel vehicles measured in Vincentric's first Canadian Diesel Analysis had a lower total cost-of-ownership than their closest gasoline powered counterparts, according to the firm.

Almost all of the 12 diesel vehicles were luxury models, including four from Audi, four from Mercedes-Benz, and three from BMW. The Chevrolet Cruze Diesel was the only non-luxury vehicle with lower ownership costs than its gasoline counterpart.

While the average maintenance costs for diesel vehicles was $476 higher, diesel fuel savings averaged $4,005.

Vincentric's analysis considered depreciation, fees and taxes, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, opportunity cost and repairs. It assumed a vehicle ownership period of five years and 25,000 annual kilometers of driving.
