Jeep Cherokees Recalled for Fire Risk

To address a potential fire risk, FCA US is recalling 32,784 2015-2016 model-year Jeep Cherokee SUVs that are equipped with the power liftgate option, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.

In these vehicles, water may leak into the power liftgate control module and trigger a high-resistance short circuit, NHTSA said. This condition raises the risk of fire.

The liftgate problem prompted a previous recall earlier this year involving 99,436 2014-2015 MY Jeep Cherokees in the U.S.

"Shields used for vehicles produced after Feb. 18, 2015, functioned as a moisture barrier for the bottom sections of liftgate control modules," FCA US explained in a released statement. "The intent was to protect the modules from the most likely sources of moisture exposure, a condition that may lead to short-circuit creating a fire hazard. But two complaints involving vehicles in this population led to an FCA US investigation. The probe determined improved shields developed for a June recall affecting vehicles produced before Feb. 18 provide greater protection."

Jeep dealers will inspect the module and connectors for corrosion and then replace damaged components as needed. The mastic shield will be removed, and the module will be covered with a water shield. These repairs will be performed free of charge.

FCA US said it isn't aware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue.

In addition to the affected Cherokees in the U.S., the automaker is also recalling 10,138 vehicles in Canada, 924 in Mexico, and 11,841 outside the NAFTA region.

Vehicle owners can reach FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) customer service at (800) 853-1403. The automaker’s number for this recall is R67.
