Kia Motors America is recalling 1,408 2016-model year Kia Sorento vehicles because the driver’s seatback frames may have faulty weld joints, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

“In the event of a crash, the driver seatback frame could break and fail to restrain a seat occupant, increasing the risk of injury,” NHTSA said on its website.

The recall covers SUVs manufactured March 3-21 of this year.

Because the driver’s seatback frame in these vehicles may have been produced with inadequate weld joints, the seatback may not function properly in the event of a rear-end collision, NHTSA said.

Kia dealers will inspect the welds and replace the driver’s seatback frame, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on Dec. 9.

Vehicle owners can reach Kia customer service at (800) 333-4542. Kia’s number for this recall is SC140.
