In Memoriam: U-Haul's Pat Crahan, 1928-2017

Pat Crahan, retired vice president of governmental relations for U-Haul, passed away on Dec. 31, 2017. He was 89.

Crahan worked at U-Haul for more than 44 years. He joined U-Haul in 1970 when he was hired as president of Oklahoma and Arkansas directly by L.S. Schoen, the founder of U-Haul. In 1974, Crahan was named vice president of government relations for U-Haul, a position he held until his retirement in 2014.

Crahan was a member of the Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) since its inception in 1978, where he served in many capacities, including a stint on the board of directors. Crahan was also very active in the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) and the International Registration Plan (IRP).

One of Crahan’s greatest achievements with U-Haul and TRALA was helping to secure apportionment for all fleet vehicles in which all trucks can be permanently licensed in a single state and then all states and provinces receive their fair share of licensing fees based on where those vehicles travel.

Crahan served in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War.  He  is survived by his wife of 62 years, Velva, and their four children, along 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren.
