Toyota and Porsche led mainstream and luxury brands in Edmunds’ 2018 Best Retained Value awards. Collectively, the two brands earned eight of the 18 brand-level awards that Edmunds gives out each year.
This year, Toyota earned five model-level awards, the most among mainstream brands for 2018-model-year vehicles. Porsche earned three model-level awards, the most among luxury brands, Edmunds announced April 6.
Toyota earned segment awards for the Sequoia large SUV, Tundra large pickup, 4Runner midsize SUV, Tacoma midsize pickup, and Sienna minivan. Porsche earned segment awards for the Panamera luxury sedan, 911 sports car, and Macan compact SUV.
“With buyers flocking to SUVs and an influx of off-lease vehicles flooding the market, residual values were taking a hit — especially in the passenger car segments,” said Ivan Drury, Edmunds’ senior manager of industry analysis. “We expect to see this trend continue, so paying attention to a vehicle’s expected depreciation before buying is more important than ever if you want to get the most out of your investment.”
Vehicles that earn a Best Retained Value award from Edmunds are those that are projected to have the highest private party residual value five years after their launch.
