Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving

NHTSA

Independence Day celebrates our Nation’s most cherished asset: our freedom. This July 4th, keep America free from drunk driving. If you plan on attending a celebration where there is alcohol, make a plan to get home without drinking and driving. If you are planning the party, help your guests plan for a sober ride home. Remember: Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.

The Fourth of July is a wonderful time to celebrate with family, friends, food and fireworks. Yet it is also one of the deadliest holidays of the year due to drunk driving. During the 2015 Fourth of July Holiday, 146 people were killed in drunk driving crashes. Nearly two-thirds of those killed were in crashes where at least one driver had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or higher – almost twice the legal limit.

There is simply no excuse for getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking. Your life and the lives of your friends and family are too important to not have a plan to get home safely. Car services, taxis, and local transit provide just some options for a safe ride.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is here to help, too. Our SaferRide Mobile app is a simple way to call a taxi, call a friend for a ride, and to share your location so you can be picked up. The app is available for iPhone and Android phones, so download it and tell friends about it to help keep our roads free of drunk driving.

America’s Independence Day is about freedom. But freedom comes with responsibilities. When you get behind the wheel, you are not only responsible for your own safety, but also for the safety of those who ride with you and share the road with you. Safe driving begins with buckling up, being attentive, and never, ever getting behind the wheel if you have been drinking.

Celebrate the holiday safely. Remember: Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving.
