Ford Adds New Sport Mode to 2016 F-150

The 2016 Ford F-150 will offer a new sport mode borrowed from the 2016 Mustang, the automaker announced. The sport mode is standard with every F-150 engine and can be activated in 2WD drive, 4WD automatic, and 4WD high settings.

The sport mode feature changes the frequency of gearshifts, so, instead of shifting gears up and down for peak efficiency, the truck holds lower gears longer to make driving more responsive and spirited, according to Ford. The feature reduces the frequency of having to step on the gas pedal to reach peak torque, so that the result is quicker acceleration with less pedal travel.

One feature of F-150’s six-speed automatic transmission is its ability to match engine rpm as it downshifts in slowing for a corner. Electronics calibration for this feature is also adapted from the Mustang, Ford said.

Sport mode is similar to F-150’s tow/haul mode, which also changes shift points under acceleration, keeping the truck at a higher rpm and further up in the power range while driving over rolling terrain to improve towing, Ford added. The technology is designed to limit the transmission from shifting up when the vehicle crests a hill, and provide downhill brake support that allows engine-compression braking to slow the vehicle and maintain a steady speed.
