Hyundai Recalls Sonata Hybrids for VPD Switch

Hyundai Motor America is recalling approximately 2,840 2016-2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid vehicles equipped with a voltage protection device (VPD) because it may inadvertently activate.

Designed to protect the high voltage battery module, if a VPD activates while the vehicle is running in electric mode, there could be a loss of power, increasing the chance of a crash.

To remedy the problem, Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will remove the VPD switch and install a new battery management system that contains an overvoltage protection device.

The recall begins May 4. Vehicle owners can reach Hyundai customer service at (855) 371-9460. Hyundai's reference number for this recall is 175.
